Strata

An aerial view of a hillside in the Jerusalem mountains inspired this quilt. The image talks about the layers of history and meaning this land reveals to the patient viewer.

The basis for the design is a one-patch grid of suede-looking hand-dyed cotton fabrics. The terraces and the layers are stenciled using oil paint-sticks and heavily embroidered and embellished with cotton and wool threads and various beads mostly from natural materials such as wood and stone. Don't go looking at maps trying to find the ruined village on the crest - it is a figment of my imagination.

Strata has received an honorary mention in the Jerusalem exhibition of the Israeli Quilt Association in 2012.
