Hammat Tiberias Mosaic

Hammat Tiberias is an archeological site and a national park just south of Tiberias. The synagogue excavated on this site is dated to the fourth century and has an elaborate mosaic floor depicting the wheel of zodiac in one panel and a Torah ark in the other.

This wall-hanging is a textile representation of one of the panels. In life, the mosaic is dusty and looks rather drab. In my quilt it glows with rich color.

The surface is heavily textured with quilting and embellished with hand embroidery and beading. The mottled and marbled effects are achieved through the use of hand-dyed fabric. Three dimensional shading has been added with fabric markers.
